I likewise am using Ed as a backup smtp server and am likewise satisfied
with his cost. When our primary server is unavailable the backup server
begins queuing our mail until we are back online. The secondary smtp server
keeps retrying to automatically dequeue the mail until it is able to. The
whole operation is transparent to exchange.

Our 2ndary MX record is set to a 3rd party's server - we pay them for this -
and we don't have any ETRN or anything configured. It resends any mail it
receives to us.

Could've been our ISP, but they wanted too much $ for it.

Ed Woodrick was kind enough to offer his services at a fraction of the cost.

Ok, that's the part I don't get. I have a permanent connection but at times
it floats up/ down. Do you still have this configured now - if so, what are
you setting the dequeue time to?

Appreciate the granularity of the responses.

So from what I've read, here's the short list:

MX1 points to local Exchange server
MX2 point to ISP Exchange server

When MX1 is not avail, mail remains on ISP server waiting
When broadband returns, a dequeue process removes mail from ISP and delivers
to local Ex box

Have you personally deployed this?

What's the configuration on EX 5.5 to pull using ETRN?

Tiggercam?

??? If you use ETRN you don't need POP. No POP3Gateway. Just ETRN.

1st MX record = your mail server
2nd MX record = your ISP's mail server

periodically, your mail server dials into the internet & issues an ETRN
command to your ISP's mail server, which sucks down the mail which is then
distributed. (While your mail server is connected to the internet, it
accepts incoming SMTP mail directly.)

POP3Gateways = BAD

You do in essence. However, you still need something to pop the mailbox on
the ISP - that's where POP3 comes in.

Paul,

May I suggest - I have small offices and DSL service. Since DSL is rather
unstable, the MX record in the zone file points to the Netscreen (MX1) and
then to the ISP (MX2). That way when the DSL is too busy or not avail, the
mail still dumps to the ISP. That's where the POP3Gateway (JAK) comes in.
Since small offices can not afford the T-1 line, I have to build backups.
Using POP3, I forward all mail from domain.com to another POP3 mailbox.
Using a scheduler, pull all the email from the single pop3 mailbox and
distribute to Exchange.

I realize that POP3 is $$. But, it's very reliable. I've had some real
problems with other pull products and found that mail just simply not get
delivered. POP3 also has it's problems - but I believe it's the best product
avail.

Small Business Edition is only $400. It's worth the investment.

If you want to discuss further, please feel free to email me direct.

Subject: POP Exchange Gateway

Hello All,

I have a small dilemma with a client. Because of the WTC tragedy, this
client of mine has lost Phone & Inet service. They need to have some
form of communication so we are trying to work on at least getting them
email access. There web host can provide them with POP accounts, there
server already has a modem attached to it, someone suggested using some
sort of Exchange POP gateway. I have never used one of those POP
gateways for Exchange but that is one alternative I have to look into
for them. Can someone recommend some apps that perform the functionality
of going out to POP3 servers and being able to route the mail received
to a Exchange mailbox or preferably the appropriate mailboxes. I was
told of an app called pop3gateway but the price is outrageous,
especially for around 8 users. Are there any cheaper, or even free
alternatives that I can look into. Your help would be appreciated. TIA!
