Well, the utils are so-so (I only have a Dell PowerEdge 2550 to compare
it with), and I’ve actually had a drive go bad already and it recovers good
enough. We are in the process of
actually getting real servers and I imagine some day a real mail server will be
coming to us. By real servers I
mean something you buy from Dell or Compaq, not a home built server. Anyway, what I meant by mail dependent
was that they all have 400MB+ mailboxes, with several in the 800-1000MB range
and beyond. These are all being
stored in PST files right now, so I’m hoping to gain some space as we use
single-instance store on the new server.
Anyway, believe me, I did ask for a real server, but they didn’t like
the $10,000 price tag. As soon as
that IDE RAID fails though, I’ll be saying “I told you so.” Oh, we also went IDE RAID because I need
a lot of disk space and when we built this “server” the 73GB SCSI drives did
not exist yet. Oh well, I do good
with crappy equipment for some reason. -----Original Message----- Ugh! You're not likely going to like
running utils on an IDE RAID, but I've never used them so I can't attest to
that. If they're soo email dependant, I'd be asking for an email
dependant server that can handle any crisis. As far as mailboxes, I have enough
diskspace on my servers that I give users a few hundred MB to work with.
Way too much in my mind, but they all love their email and I especially, don't
have any room to talk with a 600+ MB mailbox. D -----Original Message----- Thanks.
I figured as much and planned on only using half of my array for the IS
and the other half for disaster recovery.
We are low-end and a notoriously cheap company, so we are going with IDE
RAID and I have five 75GB drives in the array right now. Unfortunately we are a heavy email
company and people would go nuts if they could only have 100MB of storage. How much space do you guys typically
provide your users (common users, not the power users)? -----Original
Message----- You should always take
into account needing the disk space in the event of a disaster and
"needing" to run database utilities. With the costs of disk
space decreasing just about daily, add as many drives as you can to the array
and walk away a happy admin. D -----Original Message----- I have a quick question for you guys.
Originally I read that you should leave enough space free in your RAID array
(at least twice the size of your store) so that you can compact if
needed. However, I have since learned on this list that compacting is not
a good idea unless you absolutely have to do it, so I'm wondering if I really
should reserve all that extra free space on my array or not? Since I'm in
the planning stages of how much mailbox space to give our users as we move to
server-based storage, I was wondering about this. Thanks a lot. -----Original Message----- You want it to startup faster????
Why is it even going down in the first Personally, you haven't given me any
reason to give you the answers you D List Charter and FAQ at: List Charter
