I guess I have been lucky then. I got burnt on a W2K upgrade in the spring this year, but aside from that, things seem to work out. Even in the spring, it was my mistake as opposed to an MS flaw. Logically, you would upgrade the back end first, as the front end store (which I understand should be nuked if it is all set up correctly) is the least of your worries. And in my case, I wanted to upgrade a server that currently only hosts one mailbox first to eval the effects of SP2. I was happy with it, so I moved on to my other back end. As of yesterday, I am SP2 across the board.

If the back-end is updated first, chances are the front-end will not be able to communicate with the back-end.
