Steve   I've had the same issues. You can download an installer cleaner from Microsoft - can't remember the link off hand though it was easy to find. If that fails (like it did with me) then its regedit time - remove every reference to Mcafee and reboot. Groupshield's uninstall is pretty much useless.    The permissions problem you've had I experienced as well.
