We get that on occasion, typically, it's a user on one server sending mail to another server.  Someone here pointed the finger at our AV software.  If I recall correctly, if you're running in Combo MAPI/ AVAPI mode, the MTA gets Fubar'd by the AV and the message bounces back.  We didn't find a cure and it's intermittent and usually goes away by itself if the user resends the message so we haven't put a lot of thought into trying to solve it.

Yes....THis is what the user receives...Nothing is added to the event log of the server.

E2K in mixed mode.  When sending sporadic external emails with attachments, we get the following error message:

Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure

The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=JonesApparelGrou;l=JAG_EXCHANGE-011213211335Z-21807

Any ideas?  The clients that are having the problem are on exchange 5.5 servers, and the Internet mail connector is on a exchange 5.5 server.

Looks like an ldap port conflict to me

Make sure your AD is set to 389 and your exchange is set to 390
