Thanks.  I run MBM weekly on Sat. night to delete anything older than 45 days....it regularly deletes between 35000 & 40000 messages.

It keeps things manageable and makes users take ownership of their mailboxes.  Now if I could just get mgmt to let me set mailbox limits........I would be a happy, red-headed exchange admin :)  (I just had to throw that in after looking at wlkmmas.org.....)

Maybe you should have the user move that particular message to a .pst and see if backups fail after that, if they don't then the message was corrupt.

BTW why on earth are you letting users keep email in their mailbox that is over 2 years old?

Yes. You are doing BLB's. Your own logs show that.

THAT is a BLB if anyone ever saw one.

I am sorry I was drawn for some other work. We are not doing BLB's. Neither it is the media error.
Usually media error thorws up an error 83. The netbackup is missing a patch. this problems is addressed
in the follwing link.

Thanks for all the help.

Subject: exchange backup failure

Hello All,

My exchange backup fails (has happened twice) on a particular mail, with following error. I checked the users mailbox and the particular mail.
everything seems to be alright with the mail. It has a word attachment.
I checked the history of the file. It exists for last two years and being backed up without fail.
I have 54 gigs of mailboxes to backup. it fails after 20 gigs or so.
I can get that particular mail deleted and then backup, if that helps.
However, it would get ugly if the error points to another mail for next failure!
we use Veritas netbackup 3.4, exhcnage5.5 on NT4.0.
Any help is appreciated.
