"Smart hosts" are commonly referred to for outbound mail buffering. Not inbound. For inbound, have you setup a MX record for the domain that matches your Exchange server's recipient policy? What server does that MX record ponit to - the one you call the "smart host" ? And is that host smart enough to know that the inbound mail for your domain has to go to your Exchange server's IP address? You would have had to configure it specifically for that. I'm suspecting that your smart host isn't intended for inbound delivery at all and hasn't been configured as such. Begin by eliminating this "smart host" from the inbound path completely. Your VM-running Exchange server has an SMTP server and the external world should be talking directly to it. Set the MX record for the domain to the public IP address of your firewall/router, and make sure a redirection or rule exists on the firewall/router to send port 25 traffic received on public IP to the private IP of your virtual Exchange server. Once that's working THEN you're ready to set up an external service as a "backup MX" for when your server is down. One such service is available from http://www.rollernet.us, and it's quite inexpensive when buying a whole year at once. Carl

I am doing this more or less as an learning experience. I could set up the SMTP Virtual Server to forward the mail to my smarthost, but a that point, how would I get anything from the smarthost back to my server? Any good guides would be appreciated. Not sure why you configured that to start with. Regards, Michael B. Being fairly new to Exchange, I decide to set up E2K3 at home in a VM. I want to be able to use it on my local network as the mail server, (using MAPI ), and have anything that is going off network to be sent to a smart host at my web hosting company. I set up an SMTP connector to do ETRN and have it set to always check. I've sent some test messages from this account to my smarthost, but they have not been picked up by my Exchange Server, and it has been several hours. Is there something that I need to have my hosting provider setup so that I can have my server pick up the mail?
