Since the server no longer existed, at my client site, you have to wait a
minute or two after selecting it by right click ( seemingly nothing happens
at first... Then when the right click menu comes up, there is no Delete
option ... Click All Tasks, then Remove Server

Again, you'll experience a non responsive delay, then either a confirmation
of success, or like in my case, an error ... Mine was
The server "serverold" cannot be removed because:
-One or more users currently use a mailbox store on this server. These
users must be moved to a mailbox store on a different serve or be mail
disabled before uninstallting this server

Doesn't say which user(s) ... And to everyone's best recollection at this
client, this old server never was an exchange server, only had the exchange
administrator installed on it.

Subject: how to get rid of phantom exchange server in ESM ?

Got tasked with a weird client site ...

They had Exchange 2000, recently upgraded domain to 2003r2 and added
Exchange 2003 ... while preparing to remove original Exchange 2000 server, I
see in the Exchange System Manager one other Exchange server, but that
server no longer exists. In about 6 months I've never heard of that server
for email, and their tech basically ripped it off the wire and got rid of
the hardware. I ran the ntdsutil metadata cleanup to remove it from the
domain controllers in AD, but still can't see how to remove it from
Exchange...
any tips or ideas here ?
thanks
