VBScript (or your scripting language of choice if you call the right DLLs) or you could use something like the free "Quest ActiveRoles Management Shell for Active Directory" and use Powershell.
Then you could just do: Get-QADGroupMember "Distribution Name" | measure-object The Quest tools are worth having anyway if you ever need to get a listing of all members of a bunch of nested groups.
