Automatic intra-site failovers are not recommended, as you note. They should be 
avoided except in case of a "real need".

I wondered how people do this automatically, the docs suggest the best approach 
is a single fqdn with a low ttl and a manual dns update if needed. I suppose 
based on the myriad of potential reasons an automatic update could be wrong, 
you might want it done manually.

As I understand it, disabling cross site connections in sp1+ allows the 
redirect without the RPCClientAccessServer change, so just a dns update is all 
thats needed.
