How would the lmtp transport be deprecatable by letting the smtp transport
deliver to a socket?

They're used for different protocols.  LMTP gives per-recipient responses
post-DATA.  LMTP is spoken by other applications.  Eg, I use LMTP to deliver to
Cyrus.

That's not to say that there might not be use-cases for SMTP to Unix sockets,
but since LMTP gives better feedback, it tends to be used for local delivery
where the recipient is not expected to provide a spool.
