I am having this problem as well, on one server, and I am not using split_spool_directory..

I think, this fixes the crash.

But probably there is some more hidden problem: freezing the delivered(!) isn't
a good solution if a process, started after delivery, crashes.
If this passes the testsuite, I'll commit && push it.
It looks like a forgotten substitution.

BTW: All the reporters of the crash used 'split_spool_directory', didn't
they?
