I checked 4.89-5 from https://anonscm.debian.org/git/pkg-exim4/exim4.git
and it seems¹ to contain the relevant backported fix for the issue.
¹) seems: I didn't build the package to check, whether the patch makes
it into the final package..
So we're still awaiting two answers:
- Confirmation about the Exim version in use.
- Unmodified message for use in a reproducer.
