It can get tedious, in a complex expansion, having to repeat clauses. Even
if lookup result are cached, other expansions are not - and the verbiage in the
expression obscures the intent.
Being able to set variables for later use within the expansion would help.
Perhaps done like an RE's capture-group, and affecting $1..n? Conflict with
other uses of those could be a concern.
