Exim supports multiple lines in strings/lists/expansions/etc. RFC 2595 does not allow CR or LF in any of the response values, because they have to be terminated by CRLF. Just add an option to change the NUL replacement character to LF instead of "^" (without any need to support escaping because CR/LF is never valid).
