No. All I can suggest is that you run the server in debug mode, with

without the smart router, with timestamping turned on, and see if the
debug output give you any clue as to what is happening.
I suspect a delay caused by DNS lookups during address verification.
Check the DNS setup of the smarthost.
FYI, I dug up a further source of delay in my setup -- virus scanning
with SpamAssassin. I disabled SpamAssassin scanning on authenticated
connections, with the reasoning that I trust my users (I know all of
them personally) and if their machine was infected with a spamming
virus, it wouldn't be using authenticated connections to my exim server
to do its dirty work.
Now my authenticated client connections are blazing fast again...
