You might also consider Courier-IMAP - Sam's project has both
an IMAP4 server and a POP3 server. With the advent of version
4.xx the authentication interface is much cleaner and modular and
supports flat text files, /etc/passwd, PAM, various SQL and anything
else you feel like writinga connector for.

The main advantage is you get a production-quality IMAP server
with POP3 chucked in... you can then offer both and consider migrating
your users to IMAP.

Subject: [exim] POP3 Server with exim

Hi All,

I am looking for a good pop3 server. The catch is that I need the pop3
server to do authentication for a file or some other means of authentication
except sql based. I am setting up a mail server that runs on minimal
hardware and a sql server is using to much ram. Any other ideas if not this
is not possible? Maybe a good and easy POP3 server that I can modify for
this kind of authentication?

Thanks,

Michael
