But the original post specified Panther, so I didn't go into that detail. Most people will probably not run case-sensitive HFS+, anyhow. The big change is use of base 36 rather than base 62 for generated message id/file
name roots.  That was done first for Cygwin.

case sensitive HFS+ was also possible on 10.3, on the server version and on the client version after editing a plist whose location I do not remember.. (there was a thread on the OmniGroup macosx admin list). There is also UFS. You are absolutely correct that most people still run case insensitive HFS.
