What it means is that, contrary to what you say above, your smarthost
is *not* accepting connections on port 587. At least not from the
Internet at large. I don't know why it appears to you that they are
when you try from the "relayed box", but it is what it is.
Local packet filtering rules on the relay box?

Yep... thank goodness for tech support on that box...
Now, who was getting past my firewall from Hong Kong and how?!
I can now hit the box with telnet hostname 587... now to see if I can
get exim going :)
