most people these days use GNU grep ("the fastest grep in the West", as
the slogan goes):

$ ls -l /bin/egrep /bin/fgrep
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 4 2006-08-11 05:53 /bin/egrep -> grep
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 4 2006-08-11 05:53 /bin/fgrep -> grep
