hmm.  although i still don't understand why there's a perms 'collision' 
here in the first place (like u said, have to understand the Dovecot 
side ...), it seems that CHANGING the transport's user= spec in 
exim.conf to the dovecot MAIL_USER, --NOT-- the AUTH_USER (which owns 
the socket) does the trick.  At least, to make the error disappear ...

I was _fairly_ certain that this user= needed to be the sock owner ... 
hmmm.
