No. This is the way internet email is sent. It's what your mail client does (it connects to port 25 of your server and sends the commands you have seen Graeme send), and you can do that yourself, manually, using telnet, of course. Most internet protocols (SMTP for mail, HTTP for requesting webpages, ...) are working that way in plain text; your clients (your mail client, your web browser) are not doing some kind of magic, but rather sending and receiving commands to and from the server.
