i think this is the case. the pid file is created in the /var/run/saslauthd.
here is the listing of /var/run/saslauthd

debser:/var/run/saslauthd# ll
total 16
drwx--x---   3 root     sasl         4096 Jan 22 17:54 .
drwxr-xr-x  24 root     root         4096 Jan 22 16:26 ..
drwxr-xr-x   2 Debian-e root         4096 Jan 22 16:56 mux

debser:/var/run/saslauthd#
