I can tell you even in the latest 7.x releases of the PIX/ASA software from Cisco, most people keep the layer 5 inspection rule for SMTP disabled. Supposedly the bug was fixed in or around the 5.2.4 release, but I can report that it still happens even in the 6.x releases. General rule of thumb with any Cisco engineer I know is disable all layer 5 inspections for SMTP.
