I'd look why it's slow.....

Not enough RAM may be a starting point as spamassassin is quite RAM hungry.

Might be worth looking at setting up a mailgateway and running 
spamassassin/clam on that using either existing setup or moving to 
mailscanner/amavisd-new/.... to better control whats coming in.
