Do a
$ sudo netstat -plnx | grep \/clamd
On my server that shows:
unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 875082611 5417/clamd
/var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl
Then check your configuration:
Mine is:
av_scanner = clamd:/var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl
