I am personally on a few legitimate email marketing lists, I don't think there's anything overly wrong with it. If I want to know when a new X is out from Y, then I'll sign up for their list. I'm sure company Y send out mail to 10's of thousands, perhaps hundreds of recipients mass commercial emails != spamming - it never has and never will IMO.
