I was looking in /var/mail/[name] for the logs and were getting error
messages.  Should I be looking elsewhere?

I moved the email app I was using to the GoDaddy hosted server, and it
worked. But I really want to move it back to a server I control.

What does your exim main.log say about this message?  You haven't actually
shown us any logs yet.
