Mystery solved.
For reference, the macro is being expanded, but it's incorrect.
I had used LDAPS=ldap:// [note, only 2 forward slashes] because in my
ldap lookup i have an additional forward slash between the LDAPS and the
LDAP_BASE to separate the macros. In the authenticator, this third slash
was missing. When I add the third slash to the authenticator it all works.
Mea culpa.
