No, you were right the first time, that's exactly the setting needed.

I got confused by reading the source code, which unconditionally adds
the port number and then decides to strip it off again if the port is
unknown or the option is not set! There's then lots of other
conditionals further down the routine :(

Anyway, I would therefore modify my suggestion to considering changing
this setting to be default, or at the very least adding it (commented
out, but with a clear explanation above it) to the default configuration
file  src/configure.default
