Agreed, that'd be better in most situations. However we have several machines (Exchange boxes) that use these gateways as their smarthost. We don't have an "authenticated id" for them so we're stuck with sender address. That said, users aren't allowed to set their email address within Exchange, so it amounts to the same thing anyway.
