Does one have to place the socket number in clamd.sock or will Exim or
Clam do that automatically after the first AV check ?

They must, of course, agree as to the name and dirtree, and both must have the perms to use it.

I choose to start all of the 'support' deamons Exim will want BEFORE firng-off the Exim daemon, and shut them down AFTER shutting-down the exim daemon, so in my case it is always Clam (or more accurately its root 'invoker') that both creates the socket, sets its perms, then destroys it when being put to bed.

Any parameters or guidance are therefor in the Clam config.

All Exim needs is the 'where to meet' and membership in a group that has the privs.

That group here happens to be "_postal", which is not a default, but avoided collisions when porting across OS'en that might not use the same defaults for what are effectively 'postal workers', armed or otherwise.
