It seems that in the time since I pointed out the problem to the user, the sender's admin appeared to have fixed the issue yesterday. The solutions appears to be correcting rDNS since that was the only externally visible change I can tell. Originally the sender server would fail rDNS checks with a SMTP banner mismatch but now it resolves correctly.
