The important part of that article being: "The Winmail.dat file contains Exchange Server RTF information for the message, and may appear to the recipient as a binary file. It is not useful to non-Exchange Server recipients." In reality - and we've been through this before at $workplace - if a sender believes their content is important to the recipient, then they need to take the extra one or two steps to make it readable.
