saying to use the "default" option group in the "my.cnf" file

Before that commit this option flag was not set.

I'd guess you need to tell it there to use utf8.

Thanks a lot, Jeremy! I downloaded and compiled the lastest git tree source, put the default-character-set in a [default] group in my.cnf, and all worked fine.
You save me from doing nasty things in the database.
