Hm. I'm running 4.88 on my jessie box, at it works with rspamd.
My copy of Exim is compiled on the box itself. No Debian package.

The Exim bug #1802 was on *closing* the socket. So probably no relation
to the behaviour, you describe.

I'll try to reproduce it on my system.
