Probably different setup can be built (eg: Kerberos/GSSAPI direct authentication, or auth against Dovecod, configured with kwerberos) but indeed a simpler setup can be done, as i've just done. Simply configure winbind provider for NSS/PAM and use 'standard' auth via sasl (in debian, apt-get install sasl2-bind).
