There seems to be some confusion in this thread between NXDOMAIN and NODATA. An NXDOMAIN response for MX also precludes the existence of any A/AAAA records, and then it is quite correct to refuse mail from a non-existent source. As for NODATA, while legitimate mail domains with just A/AAAA records and no MX records are are a small minority, they exist, and should not be rejected without understanding the impact on your own traffic.
