Hi, After working for three and a half years as a staff Russian-to-English translator and editor for the Interfax News Agency, I resigned in early August and have gone back to doing freelance translation and editing for the relative freedom to set my own schedule and travel.
I thought I'd send you a query in hopes that you can provide me with work and/or some leads to work. Please write to me off-list if you can help. My full CV is available on request. The following is a summary of my qualifications and query. BIO: Born on December 6, 1971 in Leningrad. Immigrated with mother to the U.S. in September 1976. Raised in the U.S.: early childhood in California, teenage years in Massachusetts, most of 20s in Oregon. Naturalized U.S. citizen, 1991. Graduated with a B.A. in psychology from Portland State University in 1996. Moved to Russia May 1, 1998. Studied acting at St. Petersburg Theater Arts Academy 1998-2000. Married, one son. TRANSLATION QUALIFICATIONS: Native English speaker and near-native Russian with a good colloquial sense for both languages. Adept at translating from Russian to both American and British English. Certified by the Department of Social and Health Services of the State of Washington as a Russian-English medical interpreter, with five years of experience in this field. Nine years experience in Russia as a Russian-English interpreter/translator - four and a half years each in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Areas of expertise: advertising, business correspondence, cinema, contracts, historical texts, literary translation, marketing, legal documents, metals & mining, oil & gas, etc. JOURNALISM/EDITING QUALIFICATIONS: 14 years of journalism experience, starting with the college newspaper PSU Vanguard. Freelance arts journalist for Independent Media (The St. Petersburg Times, The Moscow Times) since 1998. Corporate communications experience with two IT companies in St. Petersburg: Artificial Life Russia (now defunct) and Ectaco. Edited the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2003 Country Commerce Report for Russia. Deputy Editor of Global Services, Interfax News Agency from February 2004 to August 2007 - edited daily press review, two daily news digests and weekly reports on IT& telecoms, oil & gas, metals & mining. Current Moscow correspondent for Screen International (U.K.) and Billboard (U.S.-U.K.). Passed International Herald Tribune copy editing test in May 2007. WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR: Freelance written Russian-to-English translation work mostly originating from the U.K. and/or western Europe. I will consider work from Russia and U.S.-based sources, but already work for Russian and U.S. translation agencies, so I would prefer work from Europe as I want to develop a wider international reputation and contacts. I will also consider offers of full-time employment in EU countries. INTERVIEWS IN LONDON: I will be in London for personal meetings and interviews from Friday, November 2 to Friday, November 16. Best regards, Kirill Galetski.
