I had the same problem when I moved from UK to Kuwait and then to Ireland.
Different countries transmit the tv sound on a different frequency. 5.5
khz in Kuwait and 6.0 hz in Ireland (or something like that).

I had a cheap sound chip change fitted into my TV in Kuwait and again in
Ireland.

I was able to watch TV through the video recorder as it had both chips
fitted but that was not ideal.

hope this info helps

Expat List FW: TV System

Here it is again - plain text!

Nikolaus

I brought a small TV (Sony Trinitron) from Germany which won't work (it
shows the pictures but no sound) here, seemingly because its TV System
only supports B/G/H and Russia, as I understand, has the D,K system...It
does, however, support PAL and SECAM colour systems (Russia has SECAM). My
question is, is there any cost efficient way to get the TV to work? I
heard that a DVD reader might do the job but do not really want to buy
one.

Dear Nikolaus,
It is something wrong wih it - it somes encoded. Write it as simple as
possible, and then if we see it's right, we'll approve it with no problem!
