Hey Bruce,
welcome to the neighbourhood. I also work by Paveletskaya, and suggest you do
your search for an apartment around Kolomenskaya (if you like the greenery), or
just start looking in the center (Mayakovskaya, for example), within two-three
stops on the green metro line, if you like the hustle and bustle of the city
life.  Both choices work if you plan to travel to work by metro.
If you are planning on buying a car or will have a driver - then all bets are
off, with the traffic jams the way they are - it's a crapshoot.
Good luck, please feel free to reply offline if you need further advice.
Best,
- Emin

Hi to everyone

Like Nicole further down this chain I am also relocating to Moscow, but from
London. I will be in Moscow for two weeks from next Monday hoping to get a feel
for things, and then permanently from 17th August.

If anyone can recommend suitable some neighbourhoods to begin looking at
renting an apartment that would be greatly appreciated, and also if anyone can
offer any advice on any reputable property agents that would be useful.

I will be coming over on my own, and want to live in area with good access to
work (nearest metro for work is Paveletskya I think), and also is relatively
safe with bars, restaurants, cafes etc within close proximity. I intend to
travel largely by public transport.

Any help or advice anyone can offer would be greatly received!

Thanks
Bruce

Hi Nicole,

My name is Nina and I have been living in Moscow since 2003.  I am from
Montreal / Ottawa region of Canada.  I will be travelling back to Canada for
holidays during the 1st three weeks of August and would be happy to answer any
of your questions regarding life in Moscow.  here is my mobile number - +7 926
248 97 42.  As well you can always contact via  skype: blueroserussia

Russia is a beautiful country with very  warm and passionate  people [ they
love Canadians ].

Unlike  Canada, apartments  [except executive suits which are usually owned by
hotels ] here are individually owned and rented by the proprietor rather than a
company.

Most apartments come fully  furnished rather than unfurnished- [ kitchen /
living room / bedroom furniture ] . Some apartments as well come with fully
equipped kitchens - dishes pots pans ect....  Although some do come with
bedding, and other personal items such as towels, blankets, pillows... most
tend to purchase their own.

If you are looking for a nice refurbished [ euro style - painted walls in lieu
of wall paper / hard wood floors] 2 bedrooms , living room, full kitchen,
bathroom [in many cases the toilet is separate from the bath/shower] Washer ,
Microwave, Dishwasher [if your lucky], TV, Internet Access, Cable, Land Line in
a good neighbourhood comparable to a good neighbourhood in Toronto, you are
looking to spend between $2000 - $3500.  Of course you could spend more .....
there are places that rent upwards of $15000./ month

Your best bet would be to hire an agent to work on your behalf to find you an
apartment.  Agents normally take between  80 - 100 % equivalent to one months
rent.  As in  Toronto you are required to pay 1st month and security deposit
[equivalent to one months rent]

Nicole will you be travelling alone to Russia or will you be accompanied by
your family?  How long are you planning to stay and will you be working here?

There are many beautiful neighbourhoods and depending on what your needs are
I'd be happy to suggest suitable places for you to concentrate your efforts.

Will you have transportation here [ ie driver / car] or will you be using
public transportation?

Generally speaking you should look to live in the centre or in Green Zones.

If you intend to drive here, make sure you take with you your international
passport along with a notarized translation of your Canadian drivers licence.
[ The Russian Embassy in Toronto would be happy to take care of this for you]

As well it is a good idea to get your passport [ 1st page ], birth certificate,
marriage licence [if applicable] translated as well.

PS The weather here is comparable to that of Toronto.

If you let me know your tastes and or interests I will be happy to steer you in
the right direction - ie activities

Best
Nina

Nichole, Welcome to Moscow (when you get here!)

There are different venues where we, the expats congregate, which may be
attractive to you depending on your interest (music, drinking, business,
church, etc.)
If you are looking for things to do during the day, does that mean you are
working at night?

2 bedroom flat prices are all over the map here depending on what you want
(from $1500 USD/ month all the way to $15,000 USD/month). Your budget will
determine where to look.

How long are you planning to be in Moscow?

Good Morning Fellow Expats,

My name is Nicole and I will be moving to Moscow mid- September from Toronto,
Canada. I have never been to Russia before nor do I spoke the language.
I am basically looking to meet English speaking people, as well as find things
to do during the day. Could someone recommend places to go to meet other
English speaking people? I am also looking for a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice
area.

Thanks and looking forward to being part of this community J
