I will second John's comments on Minsk, been there several times and never checked on the street, nor on the train. But you will need a friend or some other private lodging, because the hotels WILL require a visa. The train journey it painless, read a bit and sleep. It does not have to be the direct train to Minsk either, there are several that simply stop in Minsk, going either to Brest or Grodno. There are others too, international trains to Poland, Lithuania and Germany which stop in Minsk, but not sure of the visa requirements on those, likely the same. The international trains, if you can manage it are a better choice as the stop less often and thus arrive in Minsk quicker. Train info can be found at www.rzd.ru Jeff

There is no check on either departure or arrival (both ways). Moscow Registration An alternative to using an agency is to go with your landlord (or any Russian national prepared to register you at their address) to the post office, & fill in the registration form & mail it off to the immigration service. The post office will stamp & sign the bottom part of the form which is then your registration document to carry around with you. Some post offices are open 24hrs so you can choose an off-peak time to avoid lengthy lines.
