The 'temporary residence' is a three year permit to live in the Russian
Federation. Its purpose is to give you time to apply for and receive
permanent residency, which is issued for five years (or until your foreign
passport expires) at a time and renewable.

There is no "conversion" per se. You must go through the complete process
from start to finish to receive permanent residency.

The temporary residency allows you to live here, but you must also have an
exit/entrance visa to cross RF borders. You get one each time you come back
in country.

The 5 year perm. res. works as both a residence permit and permanent visa
all in one.

Thanks Bernard/Johan

Yes, if people are interested I'll report back on the process/costs as we go
along. So far we've had quotes from 2000 Euros upwards. There is a quota
each year but as I am married to a Russian citizen that exempts me from
that. The aim is to get a one year temporary residence visa which can then
be converted into the full 5yr residence visa.

I'll let you all know how I get on ...
