Readers of expat mailing list could not condone the recent squabble related
to Iphone unlocking. Here is my two cents on this issue!

Unlocking your Iphone is absolutely legal under a 2006 exemption to the
Digital Millennium Act. Here is the exact wording of the exemption:

"Computer programs in the form of firmware that enable wireless telephone
handsets to connect to a wireless telephone communication network, when
circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of lawfully connecting to
a wireless telephone communication network."

Since you are unlocking the Iphone in order to use it with just another
provider, you are not doing anything illegal!

Misha's comparison with wine bottle is also nonsensical. By unlocking an
Iphone you might be tweaking the program but you are not replacing it with
any other program. His reasoning would be correct if we were talking about
swapping the OS.

Cheers!
