Alex,

Snob is two separate projects – snob magazine, and snob the club which
organizes private cultural events and communicates through a social
networking site which is part of the snob.ru site (with messaging, blogs,
discussions and so on). There are currently 268 members and its rather
private. There are almost no businessmen in it and only one billionaire
(Prokhorov). It’s mostly creative professionals - writers, actors, film
producers. Boris Akunin is a member, so is Boris Strugatsky (author of
Stalker, Solaris etc); also actress Chulpan Khamatova, gallery owner Aidan
Salakhova, cartoonist Andrei Bilzho and the like. You get the idea. Celebs
like Ksenia Sobchak and Nikita Mikhalkov are not members. I don’t think
their intention in the //club// is to create a buzz. Members are put forward
by other members, like a regular club, and approved by the editorial
committee. The magazine is a different story – like all magazines, it needs
advertizing and publicity.

The snob.ru site is brilliant – over 70 people work on it - and will soon be
opened up to the general public. It’s in beta version now.

Declaring an interest – I was invited to become a member of club a few
months ago and have been to some great poetry readings and lectures they
organized.

nic - it's not a social networking site. it's an online promotional site
for SNOB magazine. i think the point of this approval process is to reject
as many people as possible, in order to create a buzz, and drive more people
to the print publication. the disapproval process is the promotion itself,
and airing this "irreverent look" is simply the viral advertising effect
SNOB is intending with this online promo-site.

Subject: Expat List Listening Post

Dear Sir / Madam,

My name is Nicholas Muirhead and I am a researcher on a weekly media review
show called “Listening Post” that airs on Al-Jazeera English. Our show
takes a critical and sometimes irreverent look at world coverage and media
trends. This week we are preparing a light hearted report on the new social
networking site in Russia called “SNOB”.

One of our producers - Simon Ostrovsky - has just got back from Russia. His
report looks at the new super rich online community there. To qualify for
this privileged online society - you would need to be approved by other
members of the group that include Russia’s rich and famous like the
richest man in Russia - oligarch Mikhail Prochorov. As part of the report
Simon tried to join this club but unsurprisingly – to no avail. We are
doing a fun piece on it and are looking for people to “apply” to the
group.

I thought that there might be a nnumber of members within your organisation
who would love to poke fun at “SNOB”. In roughly 30 – 40 seconds we
want members from your organisation to tell us why they think that they
should be a members of this group. Obviously this is a “tongue and
cheek” application. We would like to know what it takes to qualify as
Russia's elite and what they would bring to the table if they were a Russian
billionaire.

The fastest way for us to receive these contributions would be via the net.
To do this you would need to own or have access to webcam or camcorder.
Simply record your response (please frame your head and shoulders in the
shot and talk directly to the camera) and save it to a .mov or .wmv file.
Then upload the file to www.yousendit.com and make the recipient address
[email protected].

This report will air this week so I would need these contributions with me
as soon as possible. I know that this is extremely late notice however we
are a weekly show so we get very little notice ourselves. Please forward
this email onto whoever you feel would like to participate in the show and
urge them to get their video to us ASAP>

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best,

Nick
