I second the Varshavskoye P.O. option. I have sent out large volumes of
books which arrived home in great shape. Just bring a box cutter with strips
of cardboard and fold them them into gamma-shaped (Г) corners to line the
book corners with (assuming the packages will comprise of similarly-sized
books.) You can also line the face of the top and back of the bottom book
with some cardboard as well to prevent any damage to the paper and
rope-wrapped packages.
It's the cheapest way to send written media abroad.
