Tastes differ, and I don't know yours. I don't know if you treat movies
primarily as entertainment, or if you are as careful about choices that you
make in movies as you do in choosing a book.
The impact of the World War 2 on Russia has been tremendous. And it will tell
upon the lives of many generations of Russians to come. You cannot realize
what's been happening (and what is going to happen) here, unless you take this
impact into account.
Here are my suggestions concerning Russian war movies:
Voskhozhdeniye, dir. by Shepitko, 1976
Podranki, dir by Gubenko, 1977
20 dnei bez voiny, dir by Guerman, 1977
Proverka na dorogakh, dir by Guerman, 1971
Ballada o soldatye, dir by Chukhrai, 1959
A zori zdes tikhiye, dir by Rostotsky, 1972
Letyat zhuravli, dir by Kalatozov, 1957
Pyat Vecherov, dir by Mikhalkov, 1978
Idi I smotri, dir by Klimov, 1985.

Kind regards,

Andrei Kuratov.
