I still have my old Kindle (bought in the US in August) and I still can't
wirelessly download direct to Kindle in Russia. One can though, go on the
web to a special Amazon page and download books to your computer then
transfer them via USB to your Kindle. I have done that several times here
and it works fine.

I don't know if, since they added the international service this month,
they changed the machine itself to allow direct download worldwide, but the
machine looks exactly the same in their advertisements as the one that I
bought in August. Does anyone know if it's a new machine or just added
connectivity through some contract with a Russian wireless provider that is
supposed to allow it to work in Russia? Or perhaps it just won't work
wirelessly abroad and the only concession to "international" access is that
they now no longer require a US credit card and US billing address to buy
Kindle books?

Continued lack of wireless aside, I love it. I find the screen very easy to
read, the battery lasts for days without recharging, you can download word
documents and pdfs to it, and it's much more convenient to carry around than
a stack of paperwork or a bunch of paperback books. Plus, despite all the
complaints people have about tying you into Amazon's $9.99 standard price,
there seem to be a lot of new authors allowing one or more of their books to
be given out on Kindle for free for some period of time. I recommend
Raising Jake-a really good free novel.

Subject: Expat List kindle kwerie

Hi, Expatniki. As someone with a serious book problem -- where to put all
the books I have -- I've kept my eye on Amazon's Kindle. So far the problem
has been downloading abroad, but now they are selling an international
Kindle with download ability in 100 countries, including -- ta da! --
Russia. Has anyone tried it? According to their map, most of European Russia
is covered, but... still a bit wary.

Also, are there any obscure (or not so obscure) laws that a downloading
Kindle would violate?

Many thanks

MAB
