My grandfather was drunk most of the time and could not coherently describe his
achievements in WWII. I do not consider myself a Russian patriot, rather a
Russian sympathizer instead. My ancestors, lying drunk in a ditch
self-medicating for war injuries, were simply crushed by the war unable to
recover. Making Nazi jokes was simply a way of dealing with irreparable harm
done to us. Such jokes are culturally acceptable in Russia. Growing up in the
Soviet Union I constantly heard anecdotes about “a Russian, a German, and a
Pole,” people’s physiques were regularly compared to those held in Nazi
concentration camps, and games in Russians and Nazi were very common among
children. Your indignation about Nazi jokes seems more of a cultural difference
between … our cultures.
