You running 2.2.x? Check dmesg to see if lp is detected.
More than likely, you just ended up missing 'Parallel Printer Support'
in Character Devices. I did the same thing the first time I compiled
2.2.
Also, the lp device will move from what it was under 2.0. Everything
shifts down by one... lp1 becomes lp0, etc.
That should fix it.
